IWC’s Big Pilot Watch Flies High
By OnTopic | August 2, 2010
International Watch Company (IWC) began its story in 1868 with the creation of their luxury pocket watches. When IWC introduced the wristwatch at the end of the 19th century, they initially used their existing pocket watch movements in the new wristwatches. Soon, their craftsmen developed extremely precise movements to be used in their new product lines. Early pilots began to use these watches because they were over-sized and easy to read. Modern pilots and aviation officials still use IWC watches today, and they are known for their classic style.
The Big Pilot’s Watch has been IWC’s flagship since 2002, with one of the largest automatic movements in the world. The impressive steel case of the IWC Big Pilot model # 500401 is 46.2 mm in diameter and 15.8 mm high. The black dial is well-balanced in the massive case under the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The classic black Crocodile leather strap with a steel deployment buckle completes the package.
The IWC Big Pilot 500401 uses a classic fixed stainless steel bezel. The black dial clearly shows off the Arabic numeral hour markers and luminous hands. The minute markers are located around the outer rim. The automatic movement features a 7 day power reserve sub-dial that is located at the 3 o’clock position. The date can be found at the 6 o’clock. This classic men’s luxury watch is water resistant to 60 meters. Whether you are in the aviation business or not, this over-sized Big Pilot watch by IWC is an excellent choice for a men’s luxury watch.
The “Big Pilot”, “Portuguese” and “Aquatimer” are all incredible lines for IWC. The newest release is a new “Da Vinci” Chronograph and Perpetual Calendar Chronograph in a Tonneau shaped case that will be very hot. All models of IWC are relatively limited production with demand often exceeding supply. True limited editions sell out rapidly at or near suggested retails
