    By OnTopic | March 6, 2010

When you are pregnant and expecting your first baby it is both very exciting and a little overwhelming all at once. You are anxious to meet the little one that you have developing inside you and check that everything is in the right place and at the same time you may be a little bit concerned about the big life change that is coming and how you will cope.

Making like a boy scout and being prepared is the answer. That does not mean that you have to go out and buy everything baby related that you can find at the shops. It means reading up on what to expect and getting the necessities in place, making arrangements and getting your head space right.

If you want to there is virtually an endless amount of baby products that you could buy: from designer baby bedding to name brand baby shoes and everything in between. A lot of this stuff is unnecessary and just available because they know that moms to be get excited about buying baby stuff. The best advice is to buy the basics and adopt a wait and see approach for the rest of the stuff.

There are nevertheless a few items that are necessary when you have a new bub on the scene. The first thing you will need is a convertible crib as this can take you from newborn to toddler. You will also need a safe baby seat and pram if you are ever planning to leave the house.

Emotionally you should be prepared for a bit of a roller coaster. When your new baby is born there are a million hormones screaming around your body and this can make you emotionally fragile and sensitive. When you add into the equation that your body has just been through a physically traumatic experience as well as undergoing a huge life change, then you can see that it might be a stressful period of your life. Buying a good bedding collection will also ensure that you do not have to do laundry so often.

To deal with all of this, the best thing you can do is go easy on yourself. Don’t worry too much about the housework and don’t stress if you are still in a milk splattered nightie at three o’clock in the afternoon. None of that really matters, what does matter is that you are bonding with your baby and meeting the baby’s and your own needs.

Baby number one is a daunting yet exciting time for a mother to be. Be as prepared as you can with information about the birth and the first few months of your baby’s existence, but you do not need to go overboard with your preparations, purchases or expectations of yourself.
