Things To Know When Buying A Freezer
By OnTopic | August 15, 2009
The average household freezer is a silent slave. It operates year in and year out, requiring nothing other than a constant supply of electricity. In time it may need to be replaced though.
The following are a few considerations that will allow you to make an informed decision about its purchase..
First, we will talk about the size. And it of course depends upon your needs. Usually, most people buy too large a freezer. They base their judgment upon perceived usages rather than real usage. And the story goes something like this: We will need a large freezers because of some special sale that will be at the grocery store. The reality though is that most freezers end up being operated only half full.
Also, remember that all frozen foods should be consumed within six weeks. You food is bound to be dehydrated if you store it longer that that, and no wrapping will help it. As the moisture leaves the food both taste and nutritional value will be lowered. Anything that is stored more then a month and a half is considered wasted .
Just remember how many times did you have to throw some food because crystals started to appear. That ice forming inside the package is a sign of dehydration.
You electricity bill will be increased, although appliances like GE freezer are an efficient electric applliances.
All upright freezers are spending more electricity. The reason for this are the opened doors that let the cold air out. And with time, it will run more often. Also today’s uprights are often frost free, which by their nature consume much more electricity. Since we don’t have to defrost it by ourselves, we have to pay more.
You will have a beter choice in compact freezers since they do not waste so much electricity on cooling; the cold air stays inside the containers when the doors open. But, chest types are manual and they need to defrosted at least once per year.
Because we put our freezers where they can’t be seen, it is not necesary for them to look nice. Most of us do not think that freezers should have some additional features and options.
Most are simply regarded as large storage boxes where frozen foods are kept for later usage.
But in last ten years or so manufacturers are making freezers with more and more features. There are a lot of features you can find in freezers made today; quick freeze, push button control, frost free and digital temperature display.
