Tips to Attract Wild Birds to Your Garden

    By OnTopic | February 8, 2010

There are lots of different ways to attract birds to your garden. The easiest is to provide the food they like and a safe place for them to feed. Garden bird feeders are the best way of providing food for them. They can be especially useful for the birds in the winter when they can’t find natural foods.

To attract different species set up feeding stations with their favorite food. Examples of speciality feeders include thistle feeders to hold the tiny thistle seeds that finches love. Prevent the seeds from getting moldy by keeping them dry in a tube feeder. A window bird feeder could also be used to watch wild birds feed from the comfort of your home.

Speciality feeders can be bought to attract hummingbirds, goldfinches and woodpeckers. Put them close to your bird house in a safe place. Always check the food in your feeder daily to ensure it is dry and free from mould. Pests such as ants and wasps will be attracted to spilled food so clean it up every day.

Feeding during the winter is most beneficial for wild birds but shortages occur during other seasons as well. All through the year put out suitable food to help them if shortages occur. Make sure you put out food suitable for fledglings in the breeding season.

Water in the form of pans or garden bird baths provides drinking water and the facility to bathe and clean their feathers. Water should be provided at different levels for different species of birds. Containers should only be filled to a few inches and should be placed some way away from the noise around bird feeders. Attract the wild birds with the sounds of running water. A water dripper will attract birds to your bird bath and also prevent mosquitoes breeding in it.

A natual looking area of the garden with wild plants and trees will enhance the sense of security of the birds. An area of the garden can be allowed to grow wild to make them an attractive place.
